Case report

The following images show three cases of all three types of the congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs.

Case 1: Cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type I

Images 1, 2: The images show 3D scans of the fetal thorax with the cystic structures within the lungs (green arrows) representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type I. The image 2 represents a fusion of the image 1 with a drawing explaining the structures visible on the image 1.

Images 3, 4: The images show 3D scans of the fetal thorax with the cystic structures within the lungs (green arrows) representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type I. The image 4 represents a fusion of the image 1 with a drawing explaining the structures visible on the image 3.

Images 5, 6: The images show transverse scans of the fetal thorax with multiple large cystic lesions within the pulmonary parenchyma representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type I.

Images 7, 8: The images show a gray scale (Image 7) and a power Doppler (Image 8) transverse scan of the fetal thorax with multiple large cystic lesions within the pulmonary parenchyma representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type I.

Case II: Cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type II

Images 11, 12: The images show transverse scans of the fetal thorax. A few smaller cystic lesions can be seen within the pulmonary parenchyma representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type II.

CAM II 2

Images 13, 14: The images show a sagittal gray scale (Image 13) and a transverse power Doppler (Image 14) scan of the fetal thorax. A few smaller cystic lesions can be seen within the pulmonary parenchyma representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs type II.

Images 15, 16: Postnatal X-ray scans of the neonate. Inhomogeneities of the lung parenchyma of the right hemithorax can be seen representing the cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs.

Case III: Although the following findings are strongly suggestive of the laryngeal atresia, the case was reported by the author (and confirmed by their pathologist) as the bilateral congenital adenomatoid malformation type III.

Images 19, 20: The images show transverse scan of the fetal thorax. The both lungs are hyperechoic, the heart is compressed in midline and a pleural effusion can be seen.  Although this looks like a laryneal atresia, the pathology reported CAM III.

CAM III 2

Images 21, 22: The images show a gray scale and a 3D image of the fetal thorax and upper abdomen. The lungs appear hyperechoic and ascites surrounds the liver.

CAM III 3
CAM III 4

Image 23:  The image shows sagittal scan of the fetal thorax and abdomen. The hyperechoic lung can be seen. Ascites is also visible within the abdominal cavity.
